A flexible sigmoidoscopy is an exam used to evaluate the lower part of the large intestine (colon).
During a flexible sigmoidoscopy procedure, a thin, flexible tube-like device outfitted with a miniaturized camera, is used to take pictures of the sigmoid colon. The physician is able to view the inside of the rectum and most of the sigmoid colon—about the last two feet (61 centimeters) of the large intestines. This procedure doesn’t allow the doctor to see the entire colon. Patients receive medication intravenously to make them relaxed and comfortable.
